My partner and I recently bought a new home which was desperately in need of some modernization. The kitchen was horribly dated and the family room needed … SOMETHING. A friend recently had a renovation done on his home and recommended David. We were thrilled with his plans for the new kitchen which took it from “drab 60s” to “light and airy modern”, and his ideas for the family room, including a fireplace surrounded by built-ins, made it the focus of our new home. Kitchen redesign and project management

This is the second time I've engaged David for a major renovation and both times I've been ecstatic with the results. This was a daunting renovation, undertaken with trepidation after residing in our home for over 25 years. David helped to make the process easier: he quickly understood our design goals, and worked smoothly with our contractor (Precision Renovations) to achieve the desired results. Communication was excellent, our budget was respected, and questions and concerns were promptly addressed. Pre-construction drawings were thoroughly detailed, and demonstrated David's ability to maximize our space to its best advantage. David was also skilled at making sure that we got the most impact for our dollar: for example, by customizing Ikea shelving and cabinetry in the kitchen, and family room, and by having custom upholstered pieces made when similar items were unavailable (or unaffordable) in the marketplace. While furniture and accessory shopping, David ensured we worked to floor plans, and did not overspend needlessly. We are thrilled with the results. David helped us redesign and renovate a 15 year old kitchen and bathroom and we are incredibly happy with the end results. We had to operate on a budget which David was able to manage, using less expensive options when possible while not compromising on his vision. We were very much included in the process while also using his expertise to really narrow down to the most appropriate options and coaching us on decision making along the way. He has a great team of tradesmen that he works with and once the project was underway, he served as a very responsive central point of contact and kept us very abreast of every development. Kitchen renovation in my new condo

Fifteen years ago David did my kitchen in my last house, a few years later he did my master bathroom. When I moved into my new condo he did my custom built ins and interior design. Most recently he did my kitchen and once again everything went off without a hitch. Even though the space is small and awkward he managed to really maximize my storage and give me more than ample work space. The end result is a great looking and really functional kitchen. Ground floor gut redesign

 I hired David after reading reviews and a 15 minute meeting. Understood what I wanted to do quickly and his design was great. Ensuite and walk in design

We Hired David to help us with a design for our walk-in closet and master bathroom.  The space was not easy to work with but he made it happen. He put together 3 different options and explained us his thoughts/ideas behind on each of them.  He is very professional, personable and fun to work with.  He contacted us within 24 hours from when I submitted the request in Home Stars and had our first appointment by end of the week. Bathroom renovation

I had seen several examples of David’s work before I was even considering doing any renovations in my home. I was always struck by the tasteful elegance and innovative use of space and materials. Equally important, I had only heard glowing comments about his work ethic, his teams of suppliers and renovators, his ability to finish on time and on budget. So when it came time for me to renovate the master washroom and nearby closet, David was an obvious choice. This was my first time renovating. Aside from finding a creative person to work with, finding someone I could trust with my home and my money was a key part of the picture for me. When we met, I knew we’d work well together. He understood my mindset; he was reassuring and calm. He was clear and honest about what the job would entail without burying me in technical jargon. He was completely open to my thoughts and ideas and was excellent at finding innovative (and often low cost) ways to integrate them into the grand scheme of things. As with most renovations I imagine, as we went along, I found a few other things I wanted addressed – and he seamlessly integrated them into the work schedule without delay. He transformed a previously early 80’s non-descript washroom into a sleek, modern, highly functional and very beautiful space. He took 2 small closets, one of which backed into the eaves of the roof and created a walk-in closet! I could not be happier with either of those spaces. Aside from the creative aspect, I was looking for someone who would oversee the entire project. David handled the entire project for me. He set up the schedule, he coordinated amongst the various tradespeople, he dealt with it all. I could and did count on him to deal with anything that arose. In fact, I was so comfortable with the situation, I went away on vacation for a week in the middle of renovations! That’s trust! Working with David took what I anticipated would be a stressful situation and turned it into a creative, pleasant and exciting time. I’ve already spoken to him about a small kitchen reno I’d like to tackle in the next year! I have and will continue to recommend David to anyone who is looking for a person to partner with on a renovation. kass graham

 

Kitchen and main floor renovation

We were thrilled with the outcome of our kitchen renovation! Thanks to David for his vision and guidance throughout the project, we now have a lovely space to enjoy meals with our family and friends. When you take on a huge renovation, like a kitchen, the rule of thumb is to expect delays and to go over budget. We were sensitive to both, but mostly wanted to keep the project on track as we have three children under five! True to his word and his excellent project management skills, the team David assembled kept to the schedule and we were back up and running as planned. The trades David brought in were professional and experts at their craft. When a problem arose, it was easily diffused. The house was kept as clean as possible given the dust and the contractors were very mindful of our young children. Very much appreciated! Overall, we would highly recommend David as a designer - excellent creativity - and as a project manager. Our kitchen space is fabulous. Design work in a few rooms

We contacted David after seeing his reviews on Homestars. Prior to meeting with him, we had already met with a variety of boutique kitchen design stores as well as Home Depot. David was able to present ideas that utilized our space in a manner that no other designer had been able to do. His drawings utilized Ikea cabinets that were customized to make excellent use of every inch of our 10 X 13 kitchen. We ended up using David for a full kitchen renovation and he also helped provide drawings and ideas for our bathroom and basement renovation. What I really appreciated was that he was willing to be as big, or as little a part of our project as we wanted him to be. He had a full range of professionals available to us but we already had relationships with the people we wanted to work with ( plumbing, electrical, etc ). He was very willing to work with our trades people while also providing referrals when we wanted another estimate for an aspect of the job. In regards to our kitchen, we needed him to oversee every step and he delivered. He worked with the people we had hired and came by as often as needed to make sure that the vision that he designed was being executed properly. We also appreciated David's opinion in regards to finishes and furniture choices. He has a great eye and made sure that our end product looked great. We ended up paying a few thousand for David's services. I think that this was money well spent as he was able to make ikea cabinets look better than the designs offered by the boutique kitchen design stores that were charging an additional $10 000 and beyond. I have no hesitation recommending David, he is a true professional and has a ton of experience and raw talent.

Basement, bathroom, and kitchen design

David provided design drawings for a basement remodel, a spa bathroom and future kitchen layout in my small modest bungalow.  I wanted so much with very little space.  He took everything into consideration - a basement transformation to a rec room but possibly an in-law suite down the road simply by putting up one wall for a bedroom.  He managed to take my standard closet sized 5x7 bathroom and somehow give me my dream bathroom... a 6' soaker tub in an enclosed steam shower area, and ample storage and floor space, something I did not think was doable.  He even gave me three possible layouts for a kitchen, one of which doubles the storage I currently have. Not only did I find him very reasonably priced, his designs factored in standard sizes of everything to keep building costs low. He was truly a pleasure to deal with.  Lizy in Burlington

Kitchen reno

I can’t say enough good things about David J Design. I hired David to renovate my kitchen in a condo and I entered into this reno as a newbie, never having done one. David provided the support I needed from the start and helped me to shape and refine the design, as I only had a very high level idea of what I wanted. From the first meeting, he listened intently, asked questions took notes and made suggestions and recommendations along the way. Very quickly after this initial meeting, he took me shopping to get a better sense of my taste. He had already pre-shopped, so he was able to show me what he had in mind based on our previous conversations; he was always on point, demonstrating to me how closely he had listened to me. I provided him my budget and he was able to stay well within that, using his years of experience in design to incorporate high quality finishes where we could, while saving money in other areas. His crew was amazing; great work ethic and efficient. They real maximized their time every day they were onsite; I was always impressed by how much work was done in a day. He was onsite almost every day during the reno and kept me up to date on everything along the way. I never had to ask to be updated. I even threw a few curveballs (additional things I wanted) and he was able to incorporate them into the final design. I am in LOVE with my new kitchen, I couldn’t be happier. I felt taken care of and supported during this process and he earned my trust almost immediately.
